The Amarnath Yatra is an annual pilgrimage to the holy Amarnath Cave nestled high in the Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is one of the most significant pilgrimages in Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Inside the cave, a natural ice formation, resembling a Shiva Lingam, waxes and wanes with the moon phases.

Key Highlights of Amarnath Yatra 2025:

  • Duration: July 3, 2025 to August 9, 2025.
  • Registration: Commenced on April 14, 2025, with both online and offline options available.
  • Routes: Two main routes:
    • Pahalgam Route: The traditional and longer route, approximately 36-48 km one way, taking 3-5 days. It is scenic and relatively easier with a gradual ascent, suitable for families and elderly pilgrims. Ponies and palkis (palanquins) are available.
    • Baltal Route: A shorter but steeper route, about 14 km one way, which can be covered in 1-2 days. It is more challenging and recommended for physically fit individuals. Ponies are not available on this route; however, 'dandies' (sedan chairs) might be an option.
  • Mandatory Requirements:
    • Registration Permit: Essential for undertaking the Yatra.
    • Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC): To be obtained from authorized doctors or medical institutions. The CHC should be issued on or after a specified date.
    • RFID Card: Mandatory for all pilgrims for safety and tracking. To be collected from designated centers before starting the Yatra.
    • Identification Proof: Voter ID, Driving License, Passport, or Aadhaar card.
    • Passport-sized Photographs.
  • Age Limit: Pilgrims must be between 13 and 75 years of age. Pregnant women beyond six months are not permitted.
  • Registration Fee: Approximately INR 220 per person.

Registration Process:

Online Registration:

  1. Visit the official website of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB): https://jksasb.nic.in/
  2. Click on the "Online Services" or "Yatra Permit Registration" link.
  3. Carefully read all the guidelines, Do's and Don'ts.
  4. Click "I Agree" and proceed to register.
  5. Fill in your personal details, preferred Yatra date, and route.
  6. Upload a scanned copy of your Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) and a passport-sized photograph (JPEG or JPG, not more than 1MB).
  7. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number for verification.
  8. A payment link will be sent to you (usually within 2 hours) to pay the registration fee.
  9. After successful payment, download your Yatra Registration Permit.

Offline Registration:

  1. Collect a token slip from designated centers (e.g., Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan, Mahajan Hall) three days before your intended Yatra date.
  2. The next day, undergo a medical check-up and complete the official registration at Saraswati Dham.
  3. On the same day, visit the RFID card center in Jammu to obtain your RFID card.
  4. Carry the required documents: original Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), original identity proof, and photographs.


Route Details:

Pahalgam Route:

  • Base Camp: Pahalgam (Nunwan)
  • Stages:
    • Pahalgam to Chandanwari (16 km)
    • Chandanwari to Sheshnag (13 km)
    • Sheshnag to Panchtarni (4.6 km)
    • Panchtarni to Sangam (2 km)
    • Sangam to Amarnath Cave (2 km)
  • Duration: 3-5 days
  • Facilities: Ponies, palkis, medical camps, langars (free food stalls), BSNL mobile connectivity.

Baltal Route:

  • Base Camp: Baltal
  • Stages:
    • Baltal to Domail (2 km)
    • Domail to Barari (6 km)
    • Barari to Sangam (4 km)
    • Sangam to Amarnath Cave (2 km)
  • Duration: 1-2 days
  • Facilities: Dandies, medical aid centers, langars, basic shelters. Ponies are not available.

Travel Tips for Pilgrims:

  • Physical Fitness: Start preparing at least a month before the Yatra by walking 4-5 km daily to build stamina. Practice breathing exercises and yoga.
  • Acclimatization: If you are not accustomed to high altitudes, spend a day or two at the base camp to acclimatize.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 5 liters of water daily to avoid dehydration and headaches.
  • Eat Smart: Consume carbohydrate-rich foods for sustained energy.
  • Pack Essentials:
    • Warm woolen clothing (layers).
    • Waterproof jacket and trousers.
    • Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip.
    • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
    • A backpack with water bottles, energy bars, first-aid kit, and necessary medications.
    • Personal hygiene items.
    • Torch or flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Medical Preparedness: Carry essential medicines, especially for altitude sickness, pain relief, and any personal medical conditions. Inform the medical personnel about any pre-existing health issues.
  • Follow Guidelines: Adhere to all instructions and guidelines issued by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and local authorities.

  • Health Precautions: Avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeinated drinks during the Yatra. Do not ignore symptoms of high altitude illness. Seek immediate medical help if you feel unwell.
  • Helicopter Services: Helicopter services are available from Baltal and Pahalgam to Panchtarni for those who prefer a shorter trek. Bookings can be made online through authorized operators.

Accommodation and Food:

  • Accommodation: Camps and tents are available along both routes at designated locations like Baltal, Nunwan, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni, set up by the Shrine Board and private operators. You can also find hotels and guesthouses in Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg.
  • Food: Langars (free community kitchens) are set up by various organizations along the routes, providing simple and nutritious meals to the pilgrims. Paid food stalls are also available at some locations.
